Orthodontics (Teeth straightening)

With continuous advances in technology, teeth straightening (orthodontic) treatment for adults has never been so popular. The traditional ‘train-track’ metal braces are no longer the only choice for straightening teeth, we also offer other modern, more discreet systems to help you achieve the smile you want.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are one of the most discreet methods of straightening teeth and can be used to treat a wide variety of orthodontic problems.

Lingual braces are fitted to the back of your teeth and so, invisible to the outside world. This provides a great option for patients who do not want anyone to know they are wearing braces for social or professional reasons. Each bracket is made to fit each individual tooth perfectly allowing the brace to remain low profile and stay as smooth as possible for the tongue.

There are some challenges associated with wearing Lingual Braces such as the teeth have to be long enough to provide sufficient room to glue the braces on the inside; therefore, lingual braces may not work for everyone, you also cannot wear lingual braces if you have excessive bite problems.

Metal braces

The most commonly used type of orthodontic appliance is the conventional train track brace. This is a fitted appliance that cannot be removed and will straighten your teeth in around 18 months.

The brace is made up of small brackets glued to each of your teeth with a special bonding agent. The brackets are used to hold your teeth and straighten them; the archwire, which runs through the brackets moves the teeth. The archwire is held in place by tiny elastic bands.

It usually takes about 18 months, occasionally longer, to straighten your teeth. "Traintrack" braces are very good at straightening teeth because you see a difference in the look of your teeth within a few months of wearing it. You will be required to attend an orthodontic review once a month. During this review we will change your wires, and elastics, and check the general condition of the brace.

Ceramic braces

Tooth coloured ceramic braces are the clear alternative to conventional metal braces. Each bracket is made from a single clear sapphire crystal, which has been grown, heat treated and polished to make it extra smooth and translucent. Sapphire is second only to diamond in strength, which makes ceramic braces very tough.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are another metal brace specially designed to make treatment faster and more comfortable. The self-tightening system combined with advanced heat-activated wires mean that the process of aligning teeth is relatively gentle.

Self-ligating braces are the same as conventional styles using a bracket and wire system. However, the modern technology used means that no bands or ties are required to keep the archwire in place.

Retainers

After your initial treatment, you will be required to wear a retainer to keep the teeth in position for up to 18 months. This is usually the case with all orthodontic treatment including Invisalign® aligners. We may recommend different types of retainers depending on your teeth straightening treatment.
